Earbud Explosion Causes Permanent Hearing Loss: Safety Precautions For Use
Published on:Β

Earbuds have become an inseparable part of modern life; thanks to the convenience they offer for audio listening. Despite frequent discussions among health experts about potential health hazards, the popularity of earbuds remains largely unaffected. However, a recent incident where an earbud exploded in a user’s ear, causing permanent hearing loss, has reignited the conversation around safe practices for using earbuds.

The above news was shared by a user of the public forum Reddit about the Bluetooth explosion that happened in his girlfriend’s ear making her deaf for life. The 24-year-old student from Adana, Turkey, bought the Samsung Galaxy Buds FE to gift his girlfriend, the earbuds came already 36% charged and instantly after putting them on, one of them exploded in her ear. The guy complained to the brand to get a bargain, "Take it or leave it. If you wish, you can pursue your legal rights."

Discussions on device safety are circulating widely online. It has therefore become essential to use devices correctly, especially those that come into close physical contact, to minimize any potential harmful effects. The ground-breaking active noise cancellation technique has made it possible to hear the audio clearly without needing to increase the volume which leaves the biggest impact on ear during longer use.

Things to keep in mind while using an earbud:

  • Keep the volume low, ideally below 60%, to protect your ears and maintain hearing health. This is the first thing to ensure the protection of your ears from damage caused by earphones.

  • Remove earbuds every hour, as prolonged use can impact ear health. If not essential, try to avoid extended listening sessions.

  • Always choose over-the-ear headphones rather than in-ear earphones, as the latter sits inside the ear canal and can cause more damage. If using in-ear headphones, ensure they have cushioned or silicone-covered tips that fit comfortably and securely in your ears.

  • Avoid sharing earphones, and make sure to keep your earbuds clean. They tend to accumulate earwax and dirt, which can lead to ear infections. Regular cleaning not only minimizes the risk of infections but also helps maintain clear audio by preventing dirt from blocking sound.
